St. Petersburg Day 1

We took a 2 day tour with TJ's tours in St. Petersburg and covered a lot of ground. I didn't know what to expect before I got there, but this ended up being our favorite of the Baltic cities. Up early in the morning we went to the St. Petersburg Palace Square before anyone was there. And then off to the subway. Down the steepest escalator I have ever been on.  It was unbelievably clean, no graffiti and no rats.

The St Petersburg’s Palace Square is one of the major landmarks of Russia. The Palace Square is also considered as one of Eur-Asia’s beautiful and unique squares. The Palace Square is built on the southern side of the city between in 1754-1762, a new building was added to the square in 1819-1829 by Carlo Rossi.

Interesting Facts about the Subway.

With the typical platform lying 187 feet below ground, St. Petersburg boasts the deepest subway system in the world. Admiralteyskaya is 282 feet deep. For some perspective, this is about a fifth of the height of the Empire State Building. And it is almost a hundred feet lower than New York City’s deepest subway station.

Down to the Subway
The station looks brand new. The walls are made of spotless, faux marble panels and shiny gold mosaics, which tell Petersburg history. One shows Peter the Great opening the Admiralty building in 1704. This building was the former headquarters of the Russian Navy.

Schwerin town and lunch.

After the castle visit we wandered around the town and stopped off for lunch at a cute little restaurant. When in Germany you have to have the beer.

Schwerin Castle

Sometimes I take photos with just my camera phone and sometimes I bring the big one.
The big one is my Nikon which is a little cumbersome so doesn't always get to come out. Here are some photos with "the big one".

The scaffolding kind of ruins the pictures.

Schwerin Castle, Germany

We decided on an all day excursion from Princess to Schwerin Castle which looks like a fairy tale castle.
We were supposed to dock in Warnemunde but was changed to Rostock. From Rostock to Schwerin is about 90 minutes and luck would have it another nice day. Part sunny and part cloudy with wind I took a rain jacket and beanie hat.
Once we got there we took a 20 minute boat ride around the lake to get some different views of the castle and these were my best photos of the castle. Once we got off we took a little train looking car around the small town to see the neighborhoods and streets which also took around 20 minutes. Then back to the castle for a walk around the gardens and in for a guided tour of the castle.

The photo of the footbridge has folkloric tale that you are supposed to walk across it holding your true loves hand for a life of happiness. Of course we had to do it even though the group kept going and we were a little left behind. Hey, when you travel halfway across the world for once in a lifetime experiences you will do it. Even if it means getting left behind.
